Sri Lanka's September Elevation Spread Gives Buyers a More Precise Cost-and-Cup Map
Daily FT / Forbes & Walker Research - September tea sales averages · Source date: 2026-10-06
News update with original procurement analysis · Checked: 9 October 2026
The latest monthly averages show a meaningful gap between Low, High and Medium Grown teas. The spread can guide sample selection, but it does not make teas from different elevations equivalent blend components.

HOUTU TEA market reading

Elevation can influence the profile available to a buyer, while auction averages also reflect the grades and qualities sold. HOUTU TEA interprets the spread as a starting map for cost-and-cup trials rather than a substitution formula. A cheaper elevation may fail a customer's aroma, colour or appearance requirement, and a higher-priced one may add value only in a limited proportion of the finished blend.

What changed

September averages were US$3.98/kg for Low Grown, US$3.25 for High Grown and US$2.90 for Medium Grown. Low Grown led the monthly rupee increase.

Procurement decision

Define the function of each component before seeking a replacement. Ask brokers for invoices that match the required extraction and flavour rather than requesting the lowest elevation average. Retail products marketed around a specific origin or elevation need accurate declarations. For flexible commercial blends, approve substitution ranges in advance and verify that changes do not undermine taste, shelf stability or the finished pack's claims.

Limits and risk

The elevation averages are neither fixed grade quotations nor quality rankings. They cannot establish the discount available on a specific invoice or guarantee that a blend substitution will work.

Illustrative order scenario - not an actual transaction

A blender could trial a Medium Grown component for body while retaining a Low Grown component for the required leaf appearance or cup character. A blind comparison at normal dosage determines whether the blend is acceptable. The commercial saving should be calculated only after the recipe and declaration are approved.

Buyer action checklist

  • Define each component's role
  • Ask for matching invoices, not only low averages
  • Approve the finished recipe and declarations
  • Compare cost at the accepted dosage
