Sri Lanka's August Tea Crop Slips to 19 Million Kilograms as the Cumulative Shortfall Persists
Tea Exporters Association Sri Lanka - August production and exports · September 2026 newsletter / August statistics; checked 9 October
News update with original procurement analysis · Checked: 9 October 2026
The latest Sri Lankan production update keeps availability on the orthodox buyer's watch list. August output was below last year, and the cumulative crop remained lower, but the effect on individual export grades still needs supplier confirmation.

What changed

August production was 19.00 million kilograms versus 19.72 million a year earlier. January–August output totalled 172.21 million, 4.77 million below the comparable 2025 period.

HOUTU TEA market reading

A smaller crop can reduce the range of qualifying invoices without proving an immediate physical shortage. Carry-over stocks, manufacture style and domestic or export commitments also matter. HOUTU TEA's reading is that buyers should secure quality continuity before speculating on price direction. A national crop decline may coexist with cheaper lower-quality invoices or competitive alternatives that do not reproduce the preferred Ceylon cup.

Procurement decision

Ask suppliers which approved grades can be covered from manufactured stock and how later requirements will be fulfilled. Keep a realistic reorder lead time and evaluate alternatives before the current inventory becomes urgent. For premium products, do not relax the origin or sensory specification merely to obtain volume. For flexible blends, define the substitution boundary and obtain approval before any recipe change reaches the packing line.

Limits and risk

National output is not exportable surplus or auction availability. The release describes August manufacture and does not provide a confirmed forecast for the final quarter.

Illustrative order scenario - not an actual transaction

A distributor with a repeat orthodox SKU can reserve one approved stock parcel while requesting two backup samples for the next order. If the preferred grade becomes scarce, the buyer already knows which alternative passes the customer's cup test. If supply improves, it can continue the original specification without speculative overbuying.

Buyer action checklist

  • Confirm availability of the approved grade
  • Separate manufactured stock from crop forecasts
  • Test backups before replenishment becomes urgent
  • Preserve origin and sensory claims

The buying implications above are HOUTU TEA analysis, not statements by the source. Use this update to request comparable offers, not as a live price quotation. Keep the approved sample, batch specification, testing scope, packing details and shipment terms together before authorising a purchase. Where regulation is involved, the importer should verify the applicable product and destination requirements before shipment.
