Limits and risk
The dollar values are converted statistical equivalents, not executable exchange rates or supplier offers. The national average does not isolate the buyer's preferred elevation or grade.
What changed
September's national average was Rs1,202.74/kg or US$3.65/kg, up from August. Against September 2025, the rupee average rose while the dollar equivalent fell US$0.29/kg.
HOUTU TEA market reading
For an overseas buyer, a local-currency increase does not necessarily imply a higher dollar leaf cost. For a Sri Lankan supplier, a weaker dollar equivalent does not automatically reduce local operating costs. HOUTU TEA reads the release as a reminder to keep currency, quality and freight effects separate. The aggregate auction price and the exporter's fully prepared FOB offer are different commercial measures.
Procurement decision
When comparing offers, record the quote currency, validity date, product specification and what costs are included. Ask whether the exporter is passing through exchange-rate movements or holding a fixed dollar price for the agreed window. Evaluate current batches against the approved sample. Do not use an annual currency comparison to assume that a specific shipment is cheaper than an earlier one with a different grade mix or packing format.
Buyer action checklist
- Keep comparison currency and dates consistent
- Separate auction averages from FOB quotations
- Identify export services included in the offer
- Check the matching elevation and grade
Illustrative order scenario - not an actual transaction
A buyer comparing a September dollar offer with a previous rupee-based quote should first put both on the same cost basis and date convention. It can then assess leaf, packing and freight separately. Without that reconciliation, an apparent price reduction may reflect currency conversion or omitted export services rather than a real saving.
The buying implications above are HOUTU TEA analysis, not statements by the source. Use this update to request comparable offers, not as a live price quotation. Keep the approved sample, batch specification, testing scope, packing details and shipment terms together before authorising a purchase. Where regulation is involved, the importer should verify the applicable product and destination requirements before shipment.
