China's first-half black tea exports were about 12,000 tonnes worth US$45.01 million. Volume fell 3.4%, value fell 32.0% and unit value declined 29.6%; meanwhile Yunnan's black-tea volume rose 63.6% and value 70.7%.

What changed

The national decline and Yunnan growth point to a major mix shift. Lower aggregate unit value may reflect destination or product changes, while Yunnan expanded at roughly stable-to-firmer value per kilogram. One China black-tea benchmark would miss both realities.

Numbers to retain
National unit value: −29.6%
Yunnan volume: +63.6%
Yunnan value: +70.7%
Implication for African buyers

For African distributors, Chinese black tea can diversify a range, but it should not be assumed to replace Kenyan or Indian CTC. Processing style and liquor behaviour differ materially.

Procurement decision

Buyers should identify whether an offer is commodity black tea, specialty orthodox material or a Yunnan-origin product. Cup style and market positioning are more important here than national tonnage.

Buyer action list
  • Specify processing style and origin
  • Cup against intended use
  • Separate specialty from commodity benchmarks
  • Validate repeatability across lots
Order-planning example
A retailer testing Yunnan black tea should use a small branded or foodservice programme first. This captures the specialty story without forcing a mass-market blend to absorb a product whose cup and cost structure are different.
Do not overread the data
Customs data do not explain the cause of the unit-value decline. Any conclusion about price must be treated as an inference until matched with like-for-like offers.
HOUTU TEA execution note

Market statistics should guide questions, timing and risk controls; they should not be copied into a contract as though they were live quotations. Grade, moisture, packing, inspection, payment, freight, duty and local delivery must be normalised before comparing suppliers.

Before approval, the buyer should save the offered specification, reference sample, laboratory scope, packing configuration and freight validity in one comparison record. This turns a news signal into an auditable purchase decision and prevents later changes from being mistaken for the original offer.
