China exported 7,088 tonnes of oolong tea worth US$35.9 million in the first half. National volume fell 2.1% and value 23.0%; Fujian's export value dropped 51%, while Sichuan volume rose 131.1% and value 166.8%.

Buyer impact

For importers building premium ranges, the data support exploring Sichuan while protecting established Fujian SKUs. The new origin can be an extension, not necessarily a direct replacement.

Numbers to retain
National value: −23.0%
Fujian value: −51%
Sichuan volume: +131.1%
Market reading

The provincial divergence suggests sourcing geography and product mix are changing inside the oolong category. Fujian remains a major origin, but rapid Sichuan growth creates an alternative supply signal from a smaller base.

Buyer action list
  • Request cultivar and process details
  • Compare roast and oxidation profiles
  • Test two harvest lots
  • Position new origin clearly to consumers
Procurement decision

Buyers should not treat "oolong" as one specification. Oxidation, roast, cultivar, leaf form and origin produce different consumer experiences. A switch prompted by price or availability needs blind tasting and stability tests.

Do not overread the data
High growth rates from a small base can overstate scale. Continuity and export experience must be verified directly.
Order-planning example
A distributor can trial one Sichuan oolong alongside an existing Fujian line, then compare repeat sales and customer feedback. This uses the supply shift as a portfolio opportunity without confusing two distinct taste propositions.
HOUTU TEA execution note

Market statistics should guide questions, timing and risk controls; they should not be copied into a contract as though they were live quotations. Grade, moisture, packing, inspection, payment, freight, duty and local delivery must be normalised before comparing suppliers.

Before approval, the buyer should save the offered specification, reference sample, laboratory scope, packing configuration and freight validity in one comparison record. This turns a news signal into an auditable purchase decision and prevents later changes from being mistaken for the original offer.
