Why Gunpowder Tea Is Called Gunpowder: The Story Behind the Rolled Leaf

Gunpowder tea sounds dangerous. In reality, the name describes appearance, not ingredients.
How the name arose
After green tea is heated to limit oxidation, the leaves are rolled into compact pellets and dried. The UK Tea & Infusions Association notes that these pellets resemble lead shot or grains of gunpowder, which gave the tea its English descriptive name.
The tea is widely associated with Pingshui in Zhejiang. Pellet size varies according to leaf material and rolling, from very small pinhead styles to larger forms.
The dry pellet opens considerably when it absorbs hot water.
