The Sri Lanka Tea Board announced a five-year green tea development plan, aiming to increase green tea production from 12,000 tons in 2025 to 30,000 tons by 2030, reducing the country's long-term dependence on black tea exports.
Sri Lanka, a major global black tea producer, has been facing declining black tea export prices and market demand in recent years, prompting the government to adjust its tea industry structure.
The plan includes investing 20 million US dollars in green tea processing technology upgrades, building 15 new green tea processing plants, and providing training for tea farmers on green tea planting techniques. The Sri Lankan government also plans to promote its green tea products in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, leveraging its reputation for high-quality tea leaves to compete with Chinese and Japanese green tea.
Industry experts predict that Sri Lanka's green tea exports will reach 18,000 tons by 2027, accounting for 15% of its total tea exports.
