The global matcha market has witnessed a explosive boom in 2025, as revealed by data released by the Japan Tea Exporters Association in October. In the 2025 fiscal year, Japan's green tea exports reached 13,125 tons, a year-on-year increase of 42%, and the export value soared to 84.7 billion yen, a remarkable 120% year-on-year growth.
Notably, matcha and powdered green tea accounted for 70% of the total export volume, emerging as the core export products of Japanese green tea. Meanwhile, China's matcha industry has achieved rapid and high-quality development, with an annual output of 12,000 tons, accounting for nearly 70% of the global matcha production.
Chinese matcha has been exported in large quantities to major markets including Japan, the EU, and the United States, and is widely used in baking, beverages, health products, cosmetics, and other fields. The global matcha craze is mainly driven by the increasing awareness of health preservation among consumers worldwide: matcha is rich in tea polyphenols, amino acids, and other nutrients, boasting excellent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolism-boosting effects.
The rise of Chinese matcha has broken the long-term monopoly of Japanese matcha in the international high-end market, showcasing the strong competitiveness of Chinese green tea deep-processing products.
