Why the industry needed research
Large plantation systems faced recurring problems: variable yield, pests, plant disease, soil management and inconsistent manufacturing. Individual estates could experiment, but shared research reduced duplication and spread results.
The Tocklai Experimental Station was established in Jorhat in 1911 and later became part of the Tea Research Association.
From field to factory
Tocklai's work has included botany, breeding, agronomy, soil science, plant protection, biochemistry and processing. That broad structure reflects a basic truth: cup quality begins in the field but can be lost at many later steps.
Research also supported new planting material and practical recommendations for estates, linking laboratory findings with commercial decisions.
Science does not remove judgement
Data can measure chemistry, climate and yield, but tea remains a sensory product. Research works best when instrumental results, field observation and professional tasting inform one another.
