📜 Birth of This Elite New Tea Jin Jun Mei is not an ancient traditional tea, but an innovative modern variety. In 2005, Jiang Yuanxun, the 24th-generation inheritor of Lapsang Souchong, led his team in Tongmuguan of Wuyi Mountain. They crafted this tea exclusively from single tender buds of local high-mountain tea plants, innovating upon classic Lapsang Souchong techniques. Its launch brought Chinese black tea back to the high-end beverage market.

The character "Jin (Gold)" refers to its precious golden buds; "Jun" is taken from Master Liang Junde, the craftsman of its first batch production; "Mei (Eyebrow)" describes its slender, eyebrow-shaped dry tea strips.

✨ Distinctive Characteristics

• Appearance: Dry tea features tight, slender and tender strips with a 30% golden and 70% dark brown hue, mixed with fine golden tea fuzz. Authentic Jin Jun Mei is never entirely golden.

• Aroma: Multi-layered compound fragrance blending honey, floral, fruity and subtle sweet potato notes. A strong, overwhelming single sweet potato aroma usually indicates low-quality tea.

• Liquor Color: Transparent golden liquor with a bright golden rim under light. Avoid tea with reddish or cloudy liquor.

• Taste: Sweet, mellow and fresh on entry, with instant sweet aftertaste and silky, thick liquor texture.

• Brewing resistance: Premium Jin Jun Mei retains lingering fragrance for over ten infusions.

💰 Why Jin Jun Mei Commands a High Price

The premium price tag stems from its genuine scarcity:

1. Strict origin limits: Authentic Jin Jun Mei is exclusively harvested from high mountain tea bushes within the 565 km² Wuyi Mountain National Nature Reserve.

2. Rare raw materials: Made purely of single tender buds. Approximately 60,000 to 80,000 fresh buds are needed to produce 500g dry tea, all hand-picked manually.

3. Intricate handmade craftsmanship: Every processing step is completed by seasoned masters, including withering, shaking, fermentation and rolling.

4. Limited annual output: The annual yield of genuine Jin Jun Mei from core Tongmuguan origin is less than 5,000 kg, with a base production cost of over 3,000 RMB per 500 grams.

🛒 Market Overview & Purchasing Guide

Three main categories are available on the market:

1. Common consumer pitfalls
Be cautious of cheap Jin Jun Mei sold online for only a few hundred RMB, most counterfeited using Meizhan tea cultivars. Products priced below 3,000 RMB per 500 grams are rarely genuine Tongmuguan Jin Jun Mei. Some illegal vendors add tartrazine pigment to fake the golden liquor. Since "Jin Jun Mei" was designated a generic name in 2013, massive counterfeits have flooded the market.

2. Reliable official purchasing channels
Opt for premium lines from reputable brands including Zheng Shan Tang and Junde. Choose products with clear geographical indication labels or traceability codes on packaging.

3. Cost-effective alternatives
For similar flavor experience, you may pick high-mountain black teas grown around Tongmuguan or other Wuyi Mountain areas. Yin Jun Mei, a cost-effective variant of Lapsang Souchong, is another great choice.

🍵 Simple Brewing Instructions

• Tea ware: White porcelain gaiwan is recommended. It allows clear observation of liquor and brewed leaves without absorbing tea aroma.

• Water: Purified water or natural spring water works best.

• Water temperature: 85–90°C hot water. Boiling water will scald the delicate buds and ruin the flavor.

• Tea dosage: 3–5 grams, tea-to-water ratio roughly 1:30.

• Brewing method: Pour water slowly along the inner wall of the gaiwan. Pour out the first infusion quickly within 5–15 seconds, then extend each subsequent steeping time by 3–5 seconds.
