What the initials mean
CTC stands for crush, tear and curl. After withering, leaf passes through rotating toothed rollers that macerate it into small particles before oxidation and drying.
The process creates a large surface area, so the finished tea infuses quickly and produces a strong colour and body. Those characteristics made it especially suitable for tea bags, milk tea and markets that boil or sweeten tea.
Why industry adopted it
Small regular particles improve packing efficiency and help factories produce consistent grades at large scale. Buyers can blend lots to maintain a familiar brand profile across seasons.
CTC also fits mechanised supply chains-from factory sorting to high-speed tea-bag machines. Its success is therefore connected with both taste and manufacturing economics.
Strong is not the same as poor
CTC is sometimes treated as automatically low grade because the leaf is not visually whole. That confuses appearance with purpose. Quality varies by raw material, manufacture, cleanliness and cup performance.
