Limits and risk
This is a surcharge for the stated origin range, not the basic ocean rate or a tariff for all Chinese ports.
What changed
CMA CGM announced US$1,000/TEU from South China and Hong Kong to Mombasa, effective 25 October; China filing and freight-inclusion conditions apply.
HOUTU TEA market reading
For an exporter quoting tea into East Africa, the origin range is as important as the destination. HOUTU TEA would check the exact port and contracted rate before applying the notice. A surcharge may already be included in an all-in offer, so simply adding the published amount can overstate the cost and weaken an otherwise competitive quotation.
Procurement decision
Ask the booking party to confirm applicability in writing and mark each charge as included or additional. Reconcile the new quotation against the previous version line by line. Use the actual container size and net tea weight for allocation. If a customer quote has already been accepted, refer to the agreed freight-adjustment terms before proposing a revision.
Buyer action checklist
- Verify the origin range
- Confirm inclusion in freight
- Apply the correct TEU count
- Reconcile accepted quote terms
Illustrative order scenario - not an actual transaction
Where separately applicable, a dry 40-foot container represents two TEU and a US$2,000 charge. The buyer should add it once only, after confirming that the booked rate does not already contain it.
The buying implications above are HOUTU TEA analysis, not statements by the source. Use this update to request comparable offers, not as a live price quotation. Keep the approved sample, batch specification, testing scope, packing details and shipment terms together before authorising a purchase. Where regulation is involved, the importer should verify the applicable product and destination requirements before shipment.
