Following the Moroccan national team's impressive "dark horse" performance at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the local habit of tea consumption has become even more widespread.

Throughout May and June 2026, the demand for tea in North Africa remained high; consumption of mint tea-both in street-side teahouses and within households-saw steady growth, directly driving sustained demand for Chinese green tea imports.

Local consumer research indicates that for daily mint tea preparation, both households and teahouses primarily use Chinese Gunpowder tea. Consumers specifically favor the "41022" grade, prized for its tightly rolled leaves, durability through multiple infusions, and a clean, sweet aftertaste.

Although local distributors focused on clearing existing inventory in May-leading to a slight, short-term dip in import orders-retail sales remained robust. Local tea merchants generally anticipate a new cycle of large-scale restocking in July.

Markets in neighboring Algeria and Tunisia have also benefited from the momentum generated by the World Cup; the number of retail outlets stocking Chinese green tea continues to rise, signaling significant growth potential.
