Recently, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), Maersk Line, Daffy Group, ONE and other shipping companies have announced an increase in surcharges to stabilize costs, involving multiple important transportation channels such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Panama Canal.

MSC charges Panama Canal Surcharge (PCS)

Affected by factors such as restrictions on the passage of the Panama Canal and rising costs related to canal transit, MSC announced that it will impose a Panama Canal Surcharge (PCS) on goods originating from Southeast Asia, China, South Korea, Japan, and destination ports along the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States, in order to continuously ensure service stability and quality.
The effective date is August 19, 2026 (the date of goods entering the yard), and the charging standard is $100/TEU.
Maersk charges a Strait of Hormuz surcharge
Maersk announced in its Middle East operations announcement on July 22 that an additional fee of $1000 per container will be charged for any vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
CMA charges Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS)
CMA recently stated that due to the renewed tension in the Strait of Hormuz, fuel prices have surged sharply, reversing the previous weeks of oil price decline. As a result, fuel costs have significantly increased in various regions and routes around the world, driving up the overall transportation costs of the maritime industry.
In order to continue providing stable transportation services in the current special situation, CMA will levy an Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS), which applies to all long-distance trunk lines and all regional branch lines, with a fee standard of $75~$165/TEU.

The new charges will take effect from August 1, 2026 (shipment date), and if relevant routes need to complete regulatory filing procedures, they will comply with regulatory requirements.
ONE raises emergency fuel surcharge (EFS)
ONE also announced an increase in the emergency fuel surcharge. The new charges will take effect from August 15, 2026, and will apply to all ocean going main lines and all regional branch lines, with a fee range of $38 to $100 per TEU.
