What changed
The announcement lists US$5,050 for a 20-foot dry container to Nigeria and US$4,100 to West Africa base ports, with separate 40-foot rates. The window is 15–31 October.
HOUTU TEA market reading
The quoted regional gap is useful for route budgeting, but neither figure is a delivered tea price. MSC explicitly leaves surcharges and local charges at both ends applicable. HOUTU TEA's interpretation is that a buyer should request a complete named-port quotation and then reconcile it with the tea contract. The correct route is determined by the receiving market and legal distribution plan, not simply by the lowest regional headline.
Limits and risk
The published FAK rates are announced benchmarks subject to further charges and booking terms. They do not guarantee equipment, loading space or final landed cost.
Procurement decision
Confirm the port pair, container type, cargo eligibility and validity before reserving production. Ask the forwarder to identify included ocean charges, terminal handling, documentation and destination costs separately. For landlocked customers using coastal gateways, add the actual onward corridor costs and schedule. Avoid comparing a Nigeria-specific offer with a broad base-port benchmark as though the service, destination and responsibility were identical.
Buyer action checklist
- Obtain a named-port, named-equipment quotation
- Reconcile included and additional charges
- Use actual net tea weight for allocation
- Include the full inland leg where relevant
Illustrative order scenario - not an actual transaction
For an illustrative 20-tonne net shipment, a US$950 ocean benchmark difference equals US$0.0475/kg before other charges. That calculation helps assess order economics but does not justify changing gateway without checking final delivery, clearance and transit. Use the confirmed quote and actual load weight before approving the purchase.
The buying implications above are HOUTU TEA analysis, not statements by the source. Use this update to request comparable offers, not as a live price quotation. Keep the approved sample, batch specification, testing scope, packing details and shipment terms together before authorising a purchase. Where regulation is involved, the importer should verify the applicable product and destination requirements before shipment.
