In May and June 2026, data for the tea category on cross-border B2B platforms like Alibaba.com showed a sustained upward trend; the volume of inquiries from small and medium-sized African tea importers rose by 31% year-on-year, marking the emergence of online channels as a new growth avenue alongside traditional bulk container trade.

Previously, small African teahouses and local distributors could only source Chinese Gunpowder tea through large intermediaries, facing high communication costs and significant barriers to entry.

Today, cross-border e-commerce platforms have established direct links between factories and small-to-medium overseas buyers, allowing clients to view tea samples, inspection reports, and real-time factory footage online, and to negotiate orders ranging from small-batch trials to large-scale container shipments.

Platforms also provide multilingual communication tools-with Arabic and French translation services connecting directly to North and West African clients-and host one-stop logistics and customs clearance providers to streamline the procurement process for overseas buyers. Industry data indicates that among orders placed via online channels, "41022" Gunpowder tea is the core product generating the highest number of inquiries from African customers.
