What "pulled tea" means

Teh tarik literally means pulled tea. A strong tea-and-milk mixture is poured repeatedly between containers, often from increasing height.

The action mixes the drink, builds surface foam and can cool it toward a comfortable serving temperature. Skilled vendors make the process visually memorable.

The mamak-stall setting

Teh tarik is closely associated with Malaysian cafés and mamak stalls, where people from different backgrounds meet for breakfast, conversation and late-night meals.

UNESCO's inscription of Malaysia's breakfast culture includes teh tarik among the foods and drinks that express a multi-ethnic dining experience.

Heritage belongs to the whole meal

It is more accurate to say that teh tarik forms part of the inscribed breakfast culture than to claim that the drink alone has a separate UNESCO listing.

Pulling mixes, aerates and cools the drink.
Strong tea must remain visible through milk and sweetness.
The stall is a social space as well as a food business.
UNESCO recognition covers a wider breakfast culture.
Correct the common claim
Teh tarik is featured within UNESCO-recognised Malaysian breakfast culture; it is not separately inscribed as an individual heritage element.
Primary source spotlight
UNESCO's official file specifically lists teh tarik among the traditional breakfast drinks.
