Pu'er tea is a post-fermented tea crafted with specific techniques using sun-dried raw leaves of Yunnan large-leaf tea varieties as raw materials. It got its name because tea was collected and distributed in Pu'er Prefecture (around present-day Ning'er County) in ancient times. It features thick orange-yellow liquor, unique long-lasting aroma, rich mellow taste and high resistance to repeated steeping, ranking among Chinese teas with the most sophisticated tasting culture.

Its greatest allure lies in the rule of "growing more fragrant with age". Its flavor evolves continuously over years, endowing it with outstanding drinking and collection value. The history of Pu'er tea dates back to the Tang Dynasty, and it was designated as imperial tribute tea in the Qing Dynasty.

📜 Brief Introduction As a product protected by China's National Geographical Indication, Pu'er tea refers to tea processed via standardized techniques from sun-dried Yunnan large-leaf raw tea within the designated geographical protection zone covering 11 prefectures and cities of Yunnan Province.

Five Major Black Teas: Keemun Black Tea

By appearance, it is divided into loose tea (retaining the original shape of tea leaves) and compressed tea (pressed into cakes, bricks, tuocha and other shapes for easier storage and maturation).

The distinctive flavor of Pu'er tea stems from two core foundations: Yunnan large-leaf tea (abundant internal nutrients) and sun-drying preservation (retaining active substances to fuel long-term post-aging transformation).

🔍 Core Differences Between Raw Pu'er and Ripe Pu'er & Selection Guide

• Raw Pu'er: Essentially sun-dried green tea without artificial fermentation, relying solely on natural aging. Its liquor is yellowish-green or golden, carrying fresh floral and fruity aromas. Fresh raw Pu'er delivers a bold, bitter and astringent taste, yet turns mellow and sweet after years of storage. Raw Pu'er is cold in nature, rich in tea polyphenols and relatively stimulating to the stomach.

• Ripe Pu'er: Created in 1973, it adds an artificial wet piling fermentation process to raw tea to speed up maturation. It yields deep, bright crimson liquor with unique aged, glutinous or jujube fragrances, featuring a smooth, mellow taste with barely any bitterness or astringency. Warm in nature, ripe Pu'er is mild and gentle on the digestive system.
