Oriental Beauty Tea, also known as White‑tip Oolong, is made from Qingxin Damo, a unique tea cultivar native to Taiwan.
Among all oolong teas, Oriental Beauty undergoes the heaviest oxidation, nearly reaching the oxidation level of lightly‑oxidized black tea.
The buds of Qingxin Damo are densely covered with fine silvery‑white trichomes (tea fuzz). Even when the leaf bodies turn reddish‑brown through heavy oxidation, the silvery fuzz on the bud tips remains clearly visible.
Its dry leaves show a mix of five colours, with silvery‑white bud fuzz as its most striking feature - hence the name "White‑tip".
Legend says this tea came about by accident. Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty amid social unrest, tea gardens of the Hakka communities in Beipu and Emei of Taiwan suffered infestation by Empoasca onukii (tea green leafhopper).
Under normal standards, leaves bitten by insects would be regarded as poor‑quality raw material. Unwilling to throw away their year‑long hard‑earned harvest, local tea farmers picked the damaged leaves and processed them with heavy oxidation. The deep reddish‑brown colour would mask the insect bites.
This tea could not be sold locally. Farmers took it to outside merchants for export and surprisingly fetched a high price. When they told others about it, no one believed them and teased them for pengfeng - Hakka dialect for "boasting or exaggerating". This gave it another nickname, Pengfeng Cha (Boast Tea).
The tea was later exported to Britain. Queen Victoria was amazed after tasting it. Seeing how the white fuzz unfurled like a graceful beauty, she named it Oriental Beauty.
Two defining features make this tea special: bites from the tea green leafhopper and heavy‑degree oxidation. Without feeding damage from this insect, no matter how precise the processing technique is, the signature honey and ripe‑fruit aroma will be missing.
The role of the tea green leafhopper
Why do Qingxin Damo leaves bitten by tea green leafhoppers develop such distinctive fragrance after heavy oxidation?
When the leafhopper pierces and sucks sap, tea leaf tissues receive chemical signals from the insect's saliva. This triggers the plant's jasmonic‑acid defence pathway, which builds up large amounts of honey‑scented terpene glycoside precursors.
During withering and heavy oxidative fermentation, these glycosides are hydrolysed and release free aromatic compounds, creating the classic sweet honey notes and ripe‑fruit mellowness.
Nowadays, Yunnan, Fujian and other regions also produce Oriental Beauty style tea. Though cultivars can be introduced and production techniques copied, the tea green leafhopper remains difficult to control. In some parts of Fujian, farmers rear leafhoppers and manually release them onto tea bushes, locally nick‑named "tech‑raised insects". Yet these are living creatures that can move freely, so the outcome after release cannot be fully controlled by humans.
Truly fine Oriental Beauty is hard to come by; part of its charm is shaped by nature's marvellous work.
